The following is a list of possible side-effects that may occur in medicines that contain Desogestrel. This is not a comprehensive list. These side-effects are possible, but do not always occur. Some of the side-effects may be rare but serious. Consult your doctor if you observe any of the following side-effects, especially if they do not go away.

Precautions

Before using Desogestrel, inform your doctor about your current list of medications, over the counter products (e.g. vitamins, herbal supplements, etc.), allergies, pre-existing diseases, and current health conditions (e.g. pregnancy, upcoming surgery, etc.). Some health conditions may make you more susceptible to the side-effects of the drug. Take as directed by your doctor or follow the direction printed on the product insert. Dosage is based on your condition. Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens. Important counseling points are listed below.
  • Avoid taking it, if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant
  • Do not take, if you have a Blood clots in a blood vessel or the lungs or any unexplained vaginal bleeding

  • If you are allergic to it or any of the ingredients of this medicine
  • If you are changing from a combined pill, vaginal ring, or transdermal patch, start it at the latest the day following any break free period or on the day itself if you had no break free period
  • If you are not using hormonal contraception at present or in the past month take your first pack of this drug on the first day of your period
  • Increased risk of developing heart diseases if you smoke, high blood pressure, clotting disorders or heart problems
  • Take the missed tablet as soon as you remember and take the next one at the usual time
  • Use an additional barrier method of contraception for the first 7 days of tablet-taking if you had a break free period
  • You can start this drug, between 21-28 days after the birth of your baby

Interactions with Desogestrel

If you use other drugs or over the counter products at the same time, the effects of Desogestrel may change. This may increase your risk for side-effects or cause your drug not to work properly. Tell your doctor about all the drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are using, so that you doctor can help you prevent or manage drug interactions. Desogestrel may interact with the following drugs and products:
  • Ascorbic acid
  • Carbamazepine
  • Phenobarbitone
  • Phenytoin
  • Primidone
  • Rifampicin
  • Tegaserod
  • Tocopherol

When not to use Desogestrel

Hypersensitivity to Desogestrel is a contraindication. In addition, Desogestrel should not be used if you have the following conditions:
  • Blood clots within the blood vessels of the eye
  • Breast cancer
  • Depression
  • Disease of the gallbladder
  • Family history of breast cancer
  • Heart attack
  • High amount of triglyceride in the blood
  • High blood pressure
  • Increased cardiovascular event risk
  • Inherited disorder of continuing episodes of swelling

Storage of Desogestrel
