So you've now seen a speech analyzed in some depth, so you know what makes a speech tick. There are a couple of other things you need to know about writing a speech before we move on to another very important section of this course, how you actually deliver the speech to your audience. Yeah, that's true. We're going to take a look at the language you use in your speech and how you can use humor effectively. So first of all, a little background using language in your speech. Your speech is neither a written paper that you're reading nor a conversation, but it is the spoken word.

So don't make your text too stilted. But don't make it too chatty either. This is something that gets a lot easier with experience. Bear in mind with the written word, the reader can go at their own pace and go back and reread anything that's not clear. With the spoken word, the audience can't go back. They rely on your pace and because they only hear at once they rely on your clarity Say this is achieved by your speech structure and the words that you use.

So, how do you find the right words to the occasion, the human brain feeds on two sorts of information, factual, and emotional. Or we can choose the appropriate sort of wording depending upon which message we're putting across at the time. We're just going to give you a few tips, mainly do's and don'ts. I'll concentrate on the do's and M will tell you about the don'ts. So here's a few things that we advise that you do do. Do choose your words carefully for clearness, use fresh words and appropriate words.

Do think about the emotions you want to stay in your audience. reflect this in your vocabulary and the way that you use it. Do use descriptive phrases. do use correct language for the occasion, and for your audience, but try to avoid jargon unless it's absolutely necessary. didn't keep a dictionary right under your hand when you write your speech, there might be alternative more effective ways of saying the same thing. Always remember that you are writing a speech, not an essay.

And now for the things we advise you to avoid. Don't use sentences that are too long and complex. Let's try to vary the sentence length. So to give rhythm and flow to your speaking, this is what we call voice music. Don't use long words when short ones will convey the same message. Unless there's a special reason for doing so.

Don't use passive verbs. When writing your text, bear in mind how effective rhythm and flow can be keeping your audience's attention on your message, especially when coupled with variation in your voice. We'll look at this a bit later. And the use of speaking techniques such as rhetorical questions, use Word pictures, talking in images appropriate to the message or to set the theme alliteration. But don't overdo it. Repetition, often in threes for emphasis.

Using the same phrases to start successive sentences for emphasis, reinforcement and to enhance the voice music as well as your general use of language. do consider using humor at some point in your speech somewhat early in the speech is a good place to use humor, because you can help break down barriers with the audience and bring them together. It also shows you appear to be comfortable in front of the audience. However, we must say that humor is a very individual thing, and you have to be very careful. Humor can bind an audience to you and to each other. But humor wrongly conceived can often offend or upset some people.

And you can create barriers if it does that. You will also fail if your humor falls flat or doesn't raise any laughs or even smiles at all. You can find that appropriate humor can be effective in contrasting with a serious point and in doing that you end Line the basic message, and we'll give you a few pointers about using humor. If you don't have a sense of humor, don't try it. Consider the nature of your audience. If you know them in advance, you can you can tailor your humor appropriately.

But don't overdo it. Humor doesn't have to be just telling jokes. In fact, jokes are some of the most dangerous things to include. Make your humor relevant to your speech, try to make the audience laugh with you, rather than at you. Don't ever try to make the audience laugh at themselves or a particular member. Don't rush.

Humor is so much about timing. judicious pauses are the tool of choice here. It is best not to start off your speech with a joke. You may well fall flat and then you probably lost your audience. And most importantly, if in doubt, don't. So there are a few tips for you about using length Until you met in your speech.

If you are writing a speech along with us, you might like to look at it again and review your use of language and whether you've included humor and whether it's appropriate. There's one final thing we need to look at. Before we consider how you deliver your speech. You will have seen the jasmine was using news when she gave her speech and your notes I will tell you about next time
