I think our daily lives are endlessly fascinating. So much happens, so many new discoveries, ideas, events, memories. Most of it, sadly, often passes unnoticed or forgotten even by ourselves. We might end up thinking nothing interesting happens in our lives; we have nothing to say. In this class I want to show you how to transform your daily happenings, ideas, random encounters, observations into art and how much can be learned in this process about yourself as an artist, and how full your life is of interesting stuff, it's just a matter of noticing it, how so much of our creativity is rooted in our daily realities, which can be transformed with just a bit of imagination into works of art.

This class is based on personal experience, a recently created semi-autobiographic surreal graphic story, a mix of reality and imagination inspired by real events and personal experiences. I'll take you through my creative process, from idea generation to creating the drawings. This is more than a storytelling class; it gives you the basics tools for creating a story and goes beyond this.

What will you learn in this course?

  • How to capture and record your daily happenings
  • How to brainstorm and come up with a starting point of a story and create a loose structure which will guide you through the creation of the story, avoiding running out of ideas
  • Some basics on creating a coherent story such as for example finding your style, structure, timing
  • Tips on reducing the fear of a blank page, increasing your creativity and finding a good working method
  • Tips on drawing a story from sketch to ink to color, as well as combining narrative with visuals
  • How to take your story further: we discuss the presentation, storing, digitizing, and even recycling your left-over ideas.
  • What you can learn from your art about yourself, your life, and your voice as an artist and how this information can help you grow and develop further.

All mixed in with real-life personal experiences and discoveries as well as examples from other artists and some famous names.

Hi, I'm Yana, a multidisciplinary artist and educator living and working in Brussels, Belgium. My work is in the collection of the Museum of Spontaneous Art in Brussels and has been featured in the Dutch Design Week.

My work is inspired by the ordinary and extraordinary experience of living a life, often with a playful, humorous and absurd streak. It emphasises experimentation and diverse materials, from traditional oils and watercolours to crushed autumn leaves and chocolate sweets wrappers.

Painting aside, my mediums have included sculpture3D printing and writing, and my explorations have recently found their way into print in my surreal semi-autobiographical graphic novel titled “My story”. I teach art to children and adults in Belgium and worldwide in workshops, face-to-face lessons, online, and even during city walks
