Okay, so the very first thing we'll do is search for paint storm studio in our app store. And we're going to download the paid version, not the light one, I want to say it was around $13. That may have changed by now, but it's not a bad price for such a full featured piece of software. So I'm going to go ahead and open mind. And the first thing you'll see is that mine will look a lot different than what yours looks like when you open it up. That's because I have customized this to be the way that I like it for when I'm working in paint storm studio.

But I'm going to go ahead and go to View and show you there are six different workspaces. I am in workspace one, that's the one that I've customized already. And if I go down to workspace two, this will look a little bit more Like what you have on your screen right now. And I'm going to also show you a workspace for to show you just how different things can look once you get them the way that you like. So I'll go to workspace two, this is the one that I'm going to use to show you how to adjust things. Looking at this, you can see why it might seem intimidating at first, but you don't need to worry Well, we'll get things just right.

Okay, so the first thing we'll do is adjust the scale of everything. So we'll go up to File, go to options, main. And the first thing you'll see at the top says global scale. So by adjusting this slider, you'll see everything scale up and down on my screen. Everything except for these hotkeys at the bottom. That's something that we'll work on later on.

So until That to the size that you would like. And that's going to be different depending on the size device that you're using. So just pick a scale that that seems comfortable overall to you. Also, as I showed in workspace for the colors can be very different. If you go down to interface, you'll see these colors at the top. That's what you can adjust to change the colors of everything on your interface.

So for example, this yellowish one is the color inside these sliders and icons. If I were to pick a red, you could see them change or the colors of all the boxes can change. And you can you can change the colors of everything. That's On your screen. Okay, let me go back there. If you decide that you liked it the way that it was originally, you can always just reset colors and everything goes back to normal.

Okay now to talk about the individual panels that are on your screen. So, we have a toolbar, which has all the basic tools that you would normally find in software like this for for painting. It will probably be on your left hand side as well. And I like to adjust that down by dragging on the corner here. If you pull out, then you can make it into a couple of different columns instead of just one column. That's the way that I like to have it because I'm going to pull the hotkeys over in this direction later on.

Okay, then you have, let's see, we'll talk about brushes. And there are several categories of brushes, there are dozens of them. And you may have noticed that when I tap on it, it got bigger. And when it's not in use, it got smaller. So the way you adjust that is with this cog wheel, then you can set the scale of it. If you want it to be a certain size all the time, you can just make it that size with the scale button right there.

And you would do select where it says normal scale on select, and then it will always be that size. But let's say that you put that back on, scale it back down. Then, while you're using it, it pops up to regular size and when you're not using it, it goes back down. So that'll be up to you. However, You want to do that. You can also lower the opacity so that you can see through it while you're working.

And then what if you need to change brushes, you can tap on it and it comes back to normal opacity if you have normal opacity on select highlighted. So, I like to keep mine at full opacity. And the reason I do that, bring it up to scale is that I simply minimize this whole box whenever I'm not using it by clicking on this bar. And then when I need brushes, then I drop it back down. And that is something you can do with all of these panels. Okay, then you have brush options.

This allows you to customize each brush and even to create new brushes. This is another one that I bring up to the scale that I like and I do select normal scale on select, and I just pull it up out of the way. Okay, you're gonna have your color wheel, you'll notice everything can snap into place next to each other or to the edges of the of the screen. I'm gonna make that a little bigger. And the color wheel is very easy to use, just like in most other programs, you select the main color and then you can select the, the shade of the color that you want. You can also input RGB or HSV values if you if you would prefer to do that.

Okay, I'm gonna bring that over here to the side. And layers is something that I do recommend always keeping on your screen somehow that To boxes together, let me separate them just like that. Okay, I recommend keeping layers up because it's good practice to work in layers. So you could have your background color on one, then start sketching on another layer and then do some final drawings on another layer. Or even each individual object that you draw can be on its own layer so that if you needed to change something, you could do so without it being destructive to the other layers. So I like to keep mine here under the color wheel.

The mixer is something that will be in yours. The mixer is like an artist palette. And so you could use the color That you have selected on your color wheel, put a new color in there and mix it in. And then use the color picker to pick out a color from this palette and that's the the working color you'd have in your color wheel. That would be the color that would come up if you started drawing on your canvas. That's not something that I I really use very much.

So I would just get rid of it by clicking on the X. But if it's something you think that you'd like to keep on there, then by all means go ahead. reference is something that we would go over in a future class. It's not something that's something that we're going to use in this class. So I'm going to go ahead and get rid of that. The navigator allows you to pan over your canvas, you'll see how my canvas is moving in the background.

So that might come in handy if you're doing like some very detailed work, and you're all zoomed in. This will still allow you to see the big picture and move quickly. Throughout the canvas, it's not something that I use, so I'm just gonna get rid of that too. Okay, so this toggles your pin your panels on and off. So, for example, the color wheel over here, if I unclick on that, then is a color wheel goes away. I click on it, it comes back up.

The reason why this could be useful is if you just wanted a completely free blank canvas, then you could just deselect everything and have just this in the corner. And then whenever you needed certain panels back up, then you could just tap on them and everything comes back up. Okay, I usually don't use it again simply because I just like to minimize each one. panels and then pull them back up as I need them. So that's not something that I'll use, but it might be something that you think would come in handy. Okay, then let's say you accidentally got rid of something that you didn't want to, like for example, the brush options, then I could always go back up to view and pull that panel back up by clicking on brush options, and it come right back where it was.

The color library is something that is discussed in a future class as well. For now, we'll just go ahead and use the color wheel. Okay, so now let's talk about these hotkeys. The hotkeys. Some of these are kind of redundant to me, so I'm going to get rid of them. I will go off to file.

Define hotkeys. And for example the brush tool color picker and eraser tool. I don't really see a need to have them down here when they're already in my tools panel over here. So I would just do select those and you see them go away. Okay, I don't really use the Phil brush while drawing very much the brush resize by drag tool. I do like that.

I'll show you how to use that. I don't really use the Rotate Canvas but I do like when it resets the canvas angle, so I'll put that one up on there. We will be using seamless mode in this class so I recommend that you add that hotkey as well. And then undo and redo I do like to have that on my in my hotkeys available. Okay, and I think that'll be good for me. But go ahead and read through them.

See if there's something that you think you might might like up there. You can always delete it later if you if you don't like it. Okay, so I'm going to click out of that. You'll see that they're just kind of randomly all over my screen so we can go ahead and move them around by using two fingers. You put one on the hotkey and one right beside it, and you can just drag it down. Okay, so I'm gonna I like to have my seamless mode one down here in the corner.

And then Undo, Redo. This makes the canvas like the full screen size. This resets the canvas angle, and the brush size. And then each one of these you can actually resize it can be a little bit tricky. But for example, this one, if I pull my fingers out while I hold it down, then it'll get bigger, but it's kind of hard to get it smaller. But you can play around with it.

Sometimes it'll work just fine and sometimes you got to play with it for a little while. Okay, so hopefully now you have your workspace set up just the way that you like it. And we'll go ahead and move on to actually creating a surface pattern in the next lesson.
