Good morning. This morning. well pleased to play coffee blues, really what you need to learn is just what you're playing over each court. And that's really true for all these these songs that we're going through and all the different keys and coffee blues are really is no introduction. He just kind of starts playing it and you make that long a shake. And we're going to start with this leg.

That's how you kick it off. And what I'm doing is starting on the fifth open fifth string with my first finger up stroking the second string, I've got this long a cord that I'm keeping. And then I'm going to come down with my bass on the fourth string. And I'm going to upstroke with my first finger getting really the first and second string. So we got this Whoops, didn't want to get the low E there. So we got this.

So if you get that down really, every time you play this long a shape, you're going to use that little lick. And then watch what I do next to get to the four. We're only on the one here for a short time. Then we're going to the a seven. So I'll try to play that slower for you. You can check the tab and see if that helps you watch it one more time.

It's a little different that that time but that'll work. So that's what we're playing over the a and then very quickly going into the tea, so Got this. What we're doing is as we come into the D as we get ready to make a D shape, pinching the open fifth string, which is our alternate part of our alternating bass over the D, and then I'm pitching the first string, and then I'm hammering on the chord. So I got this. That kind of motion coming down on the fourth string, so watch me play it in context. So when I have are on here on the D, I'm gonna get the second string as my left hand has got the D chord, and then my bass becomes a five for that little transition there.

Where we're hammering on the core, that is kind of the one of the themes In this tin, he does this this quite a bit when it comes from the A to the D and then later when it gets back to the A, you'll see what I mean here in a minute. So coffee blues so far Oh, we played the D part all the way through. We got this. Now what we're doing is with our left hand, we're lifting up the second finger like that as we're picking the base, so we got so let's take it all the way through again from the wind. He does some different things here. Sometimes I'll just pick this up.

Sometimes Oh hammer If you listen to the original recording Jeff, Mississippi, john hurts version of coffee blues, it's a really good live version he did in the 60s. That's on YouTube, when this is the one I'm the one I learned. And he changes how he he hammers on to the second fret of the second string out of that D shape. So in this version, I'm just showing you kind of the basic way of doing the song. So we got this and then we're gonna go back to our long a out of the D chord. So watch how I do this.

So yeah, we're hammering on the chord, we're bringing that long a shape back in from the D. So let me try that again. So as I'm in the D, making a switch, it's kind of tricky. I think this is one you just kind of play around with and listen to the recording of the song and you'll get it. It's kind of hard for me to teach that timing. I'll try to tab it out for you. But let me play it again from the D. We're back into the A.

And then we go to an E. What we're doing here is to open strings twice, getting the open first and second string, so we're coming from the A. And then we're doing this little lick into an East seventh. So what I'm doing is getting the open six as I hammered on With my first finger on the first fret of the third string, so we got this. So right there, kind of hard to slow that down. We're going from an E. Now we're going to put our pinky on the third fret of the second string and get an ISA. So let me play that whole part again from the then we got this back to the A.

And what I'm doing there from the E is again, I'm doing one of these chord hammers, I'm picking the fifth string and the second string As I'm bringing my a shape, just the first finger part and then the pinky is gonna get in there too. So we go like this. That's really the whole song just going through and he's playing that pattern over and over again. And then the main variations kind of when he plays over the, the D. So let me play a coffee blues for you a couple verses through, and I'll play it slowly. Just again, watch what I'm playing over each chord. Learn it one part at a time.

Put it all together. Here we go. gotta turn around or a tag that we'll throw in here too. As I go through the E, I forgot to mention with the E my alternating alternating bass is my open sixth string and my fourth string which is fretted at the second fret. So, that's my alternating bass, and he probably figured that out already. In the last lecture here, I'll show you the end tag which is one that we'll use and in several different forms as part of these songs in the key of A
