Dolowin SR Tablet is a prescription medicine that is used to relieve pain from long-lasting damage to the joints caused by osteoarthritis. This medicine works by preventing the release of an organic substance in the body that causes swelling and pain. Dolowin SR Tablet is also used to relieve pain associated with swelling and stiffness of the joints caused by rheumatoid arthritis, and to relieve swelling of the backbone caused by spondylitis.
Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs
Dolowin SR belongs to the Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs class of medicines. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, also called as NSAIDs, help reduce fever, decrease pain, and prevent clotting of blood. NSAIDs also reduce inflammation in the body when used in higher doses.

How to use

Read the directions on the product label, patient guide, or medicine guide provided by the medicine company or your pharmacist before starting to use Dolowin SR Tablet. If you have any questions related to this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Eat this medicine as recommended by your doctor.
Pain medicines work best if they are used as soon as you feel any signs of pain. Dolowin SR Tablet may not work well if you delay using it until the symptoms have worsened.
Dolowin SR Tablet is eaten with or after food. Dolowin SR Tablet is eaten usually in the morning and evening.

Typical Dosage

The typical dose of Dolowin SR is 200 mg daily (100 mg twice a day). This medicine is not known to be habit-forming.
This medicine should be used on an as-needed basis. Careful monitoring is required while starting long-term treatment in patients with known conditions that may have increased their risk of heart disease including high blood pressure, high count of lipids in the blood, high blood sugar level or diabetes, and smoking.

Talk to Your Doctor

Talk to your doctor if your condition persists or worsens or if you develop new symptoms. If you have any kidney disease, a smaller dose may be prescribed to decrease the risk of kidney problems. If you have issues with the health of your liver, a lower dose may be prescribed to lower the risk of liver problems.
Taking a higher dose of this medicine may increase the risk of side-effects. A lower dose of this medicine may be recommended to reduce the risk of side-effects. Older patients may see an increase in the incidence of side-effects with this medicine. As a result, a lower dose may be recommended for older patients.

Use in Children

The safety and effectiveness of using Dolowin SR Tablet in children has not been established. Hence, this medicine should not be used in children under 18 years.

Storage

You should store Dolowin SR Tablet below 25°C (77° F), and preserve in tight containers. Store the medicine away from the reach of children and pets.
Medicines may be prescribed for uses other than those listed in the medicine guide. Do not use Dolowin SR Tablet for conditions for which it was not prescribed. Do not give Dolowin SR Tablet to other people who might have the same conditions or symptoms that you have. Self-medication may harm them.

How to take Dolowin SR

The dose and frequency of using Dolowin SR will depend on the following factors:

Missed Dose

Take your dose as soon as you remember it. Do not double your dose to make up a forgotten dose.

Overdose

What to do if you overdose on Dolowin SR?
If you have taken more than the recommended dose of Dolowin SR, get medical advice immediately. If the overdose has happened within the last 1 hour, the toxic effect can be reduced by taking activated charcoal. Activated Charcoal is a form of carbon that has small, low-volume pores. These pores help trap chemicals as in the case of poisoning. In adults, removal of the contents of the stomach (gastric lavage) should be done up within one hour of ingestion of Dolowin SR. There should be adequate urine output. Patients should be under medical observation for at least four hours after toxic ingestion of Dolowin SR. Careful monitoring of kidney and liver function is required. In case of occurrence of convulsions, patients should be treated with intravenous diazepam.

Precautions while using Dolowin SR

Before you use Dolowin SR, tell your doctor of your medical and health history including the following:
  • abnormal pumping of blood by heart
  • an overactive immune system
  • bleeding disorder
  • bleeding from ruptured blood vessels associated with brain
  • bleeding in the stomach or intestines
  • diabetes
  • difficulty in breathing due to bronchial asthma
  • diminished blood supply to the brain
  • high blood pressure
  • high cholesterol levels
  • if you are pregnant women
  • inflammation in the digestive tract (ulcerative colitis)
  • kidney failure
  • liver failure
  • other problems of the stomach or intestines
  • recurrent ulcers in stomach
  • recurring chickenpox or shingles
  • reduced blood supply to limbs due to narrowing of blood vessels
  • reduced blood supply to the heart
Using NSAIDs in these patients can worsen the existing conditions.
Before you use Dolowin SR, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it or its ingredients. Your doctor may prescribe an alternative medicine and update your medical records to record this information. Discuss with your doctor if you are allergic to aspirin, ibuprofen, or other NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
Before having any surgery, discuss with your doctor and dentist about medicines you use including prescription medicines, non-prescription medicines, and herbal supplements.
The use of this medicine may change the functioning of liver. Dolowin SR can increase the levels of liver enzymes which can result in a liver failure.
The use of Dolowin SR Tablet may change gastrointestinal secretion. If you are giving this medicine to elderly patients, this may result in an increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.

Use when Pregnant

Dolowin SR should be used only when required in patients who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. This medicine increases the risk of abnormal fetal development, congenital heart abnormalities and sudden loss of pregnancy if used in the early stages of pregnancy. Dolowin SR should not be used in the third trimester of pregnancy, because it may lead to kidney failure in the fetus, prolongation of bleeding time and delayed or prolonged labor in mother. Dolowin SR belongs to the NSAID class of medicines. NSAIDs should not be taken after 29 weeks of pregnancy as these medicines may cause serious harm to the unborn baby.

If Breastfeeding

Dolowin SR Tablet should be used while breastfeeding only when required. The use of Dolowin SR should therefore be avoided in lactation unless the potential benefits to the other outweigh the possible risks to the foetus.

If trying to Conceive

Dolowin SR may impact fertility in women. If you are trying to conceive, discuss with your doctor on the use of this medicine. This medicine may impact female fertility. The temporary discontinuation of Dolowin SR should be considered in women having difficulties to conceive or undergoing investigations for infertility.

Dizziness

Dolowin SR can make you feel sleepy. Be careful, especially while driving, while using heavy machinery, or when doing any activity that needs you to be completely alert. The consumption of alcohol with Dolowin SR can worsen the sleepiness.

Increase in Risk

This medicine may cause stomach bleeding. Regular use of tobacco or alcohol may increase the risk. Discuss with your doctor if you smoke and drink alcohol regularly. This medicine may increase your sensitivity to sunlight and make you prone to sunburn. If this happens, limit your time outdoors to prevent sunburn. Use a sunscreen and cover your skin.

Side-effects in Older Patients

Older patients may have a higher incidence of side-effects when using Dolowin SR Tablet. Elderly patients may see an increased risk of stomach bleeding, bleeding in the intestines, and gastrointestinal perforation.

Long-term Use

Use of Dolowin SR for a long time at high doses increase the risk of stroke and heart attack.

The following severe side-effects may also occur when using Dolowin SR Tablet:
  • The treatment should be done with the lowest dose available.
  • Bronchospasm (tightening of the respiratory muscles)
    This medicine should be used with caution in the patients who are suffering from or having a history of bronchial asthma.
  • Severe skin reactions such as loss of outer skin layer and mucosal layer (Stevens Johnson syndrome) and redness or peeling of the skin (possible death)
    Symptoms: skin rash injury on the inner lining of the mouth
    If this happens, stop using this medicine.
  • Gastrointestinal ulceration
    The lowest dose should be selected for treatment in this disease.
  • Worsening of ulcerative colitis (inflammation in the digestive tract)
    The treatment should be done with the lowest dose available.

Female Infertility

Women who are trying to conceive are at increased risk when using this medicine. The women using this medicine may have difficulty in conceiving. This medicine should be discontinued in women who are trying to be pregnant, who have difficulty in conceiving or who are undergoing evaluation for infertility.

Blood Disorders

Patients with blood disorder may be at an increased risk while using this medicine. Dolowin SR reduces blood clot formation which can result in abnormal bleeding. Dolowin SR should not be used in such patients.

Long-Term Treatment with Dolowin SR

Patients using Dolowin SR for long-term treatment are at increased risk. The long-term use of this medicine may cause heart problems. Careful monitoring of the functioning of the kidneys, the functioning of the liver, and blood count is required when using this medicine for the long term.

Gastrointestinal Problems in Elderly Patients

Elderly patients with gastrointestinal problems, particularly those who are sensitive to NSAIDs are at increased risk when using this medicine. Patients using Dolowin SR may have gastrointestinal bleeding and ulceration. This medicine should be used carefully in such patients.

Gastrointestinal Disorders

Patients with gastrointestinal disorder like ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are at an increased risk when using this medicine. Patients using Dolowin SR may have gastrointestinal bleeding and ulceration. This medicine should be used carefully in such patients.

Systemic Autoimmune Disease

Patients with lupus are at increased risk when using this medicine. These patients may have an increased risk of inflammation of the brain and spinal cord membranes (aseptic meningitis).

Bronchial Asthma

Patients suffering from, or with a previous history of bronchial asthma are at increased risk of difficulty in breathing when using this medicine. These patients may have an increased risk of narrowing of the airway passage of the lungs a condition also known as bronchospasm. Caution is required while using Dolowin SR in such patients.

Mild to Moderate Kidney Problems

Patients with mild to moderate kidney problems are at increased risk when using this medicine. These patients may have an increased risk of kidney failure. While using Dolowin SR in such patients, the functioning of the kidneys should be monitored carefully.

High Blood Pressure and Heart Disease

Patients with a history of high blood pressure and mild to moderate congestive heart failure are at increased risk when using this medicine. These patients may have an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and accumulation of excessive water in the body. Dolowin SR should be taken with caution and under close medical supervision.

Antimanic Agents

Antimetabolites

Anticoagulants

Antidiabetic Agents

Allergic to Dolowin SR

This medicine should not be given in patients with known allergic reactions to the Dolowin SR and its excipients. These patients may have the following symptoms if they use this medicine:

Stomach Ulcer

This medicine is not recommended for patients who have a history of stomach ulcers. Such patients may see an increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. These patients may have the following symptoms if they use this medicine:

History of Bleeding Disorder

This medicine should not be given in patients with prior history of bleeding disorders.

Pregnancy

This medicine should not be given during the last trimester of pregnancy. Use of this medicine during pregnancy may increase the risk of high blood pressure within the arteries of the lungs after birth, damage to the heart and lungs by ingestion of harmful chemicals, and kidney dysfunction in newborn. These patients may have the following symptoms if they use this medicine:

Heart Diseases

This medicine should be avoided in patients with known heart diseases (congestive heart failure and ischaemic heart disease). These patients may have the following symptoms if they use this medicine:

Traveling With Medication

  • Ensure that you carry enough doses of each of your prescription medicines to last the entire trip. The best place to store your medicines is in the carry on baggage. However, while flying, if carrying liquid medicines, make sure you do not go over the limits imposed for carry-on liquids.
  • While traveling overseas, make sure that you can carry each of your prescription medicines legally to your destination country. One way to ensure this is by checking with your destination country's embassy or website.
  • Make sure that you carry each of your medicines in their original packaging, which should typically include your name and address, and the details of the prescribing doctor.
  • If your travel involves crossing time zones, and you are required to take your medicine as per a fixed schedule, make sure that you adjust for the change in time.

Expired Medication

Taking a single dose of expired Dolowin SR is unlikely to cause a side-effect. However, please discuss with your doctor or pharmacist, if you feel unwell or sick. Safe Disposal of Medication
