Losartan Bluepharma belongs to the Angiotensin 2 Receptor Blocker class of medicines. Angiotensin II receptor blockers are used for the treatment of high blood pressure and heart failure. These medicines act by relaxing the blood vessels and makes it easier for your heart to pump blood.

How to use

Losartan Bluepharma is consumed with or without food. If a child is unable to swallow a tablet, a liquid form (suspension) is given after consultation with the pharmacist or doctor.

Typical Dosage

The typical dose of Losartan Bluepharma for adults is 50 mg once daily as usual starting dose which can be increased to 100 mg according to the patient's blood pressure response to the medicine. The usual dose for children is 0.7 mg/kg or 0.3 mg/lb once daily (up to 50 mg). The maximum dose for adult patients of Losartan Bluepharma is 100 mg once daily per day. Losartan Bluepharma is commonly used at the same time every day. This medicine is not known to be addictive or habit-forming.
This medicine is to be used for longer periods of time. Use of Losartan Bluepharma may be prescribed for the long-term to control the high blood pressure conditions. Losartan Bluepharma should be used as directed by the doctor even if you feel well, or even if you think that there is no need for you to use your medicine.
If using the liquid form of this medicine, measure the dose using the provided measuring cup, spoon, or dropper. Before pouring the medicine into the measuring device, you should check the measurement markings carefully. Then, pour the dose amount into the device. After use, clean and store the measuring device in a safe place for your next use. You should not use a tablespoon or teaspoon as the dose measuring devices since it can result in an incorrect dose. If indicated on the product package, shake the medicine before use.

If you have issues with the health of your liver, The starting dose of 25 mg once daily is recommended in patients with abnormal liver function. Consult with your doctor before stopping the use of Losartan Bluepharma.

Use in Children

If you are giving Losartan Bluepharma Tablet to a child, be sure to use a product that is for use in children. Missed Dose

Overdose

Precautions while using Losartan Bluepharma

Before you use Losartan Bluepharma, tell your doctor of your medical and health history including the following:

The use of this medicine may change red blood cells count (hemoglobin) and the ratio of the volume of red blood cells to the total volume of blood (hematocrit). A small decrease in hemoglobin and hematocrit value has been reported in patients while using this medicine.
The use of this medicine may change blood creatinine levels. A minor increase in blood creatinine level has been reported in patients while using this medicine.

Use when Pregnant

Losartan Bluepharma is not safe for use in women who are pregnant. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you should discuss the impact on the fetus with your doctor before you start using this medicine. The use of this medicine in pregnant women can cause injury to the developing fetus and is possibly fatal to the unborn baby.

If Breastfeeding

Losartan Bluepharma Tablet is not safe for use in women who are breastfeeding. If you are breastfeeding, discuss with your doctor if you should either discontinue breastfeeding, or stop using this medicine during this period. It is unknown that if this medicine may pass into breast milk or not.

If trying to Conceive

Consult with your doctor on the use of Losartan Bluepharma, if you are trying to conceive.

Dizziness

Losartan Bluepharma can make you feel sleepy. Be careful, especially while driving, while using heavy machinery, or when doing any activity that needs you to be completely alert. The consumption of alcohol with Losartan Bluepharma can worsen the sleepiness.

Increase in Risk

This medicine may increase your sensitivity to sunlight and make you prone to sunburn. If this happens, limit your time outdoors to prevent sunburn. Use a sunscreen and cover your skin.

Warnings

Increased Hormonal Levels (Aldosterone)

Children with abnormal functioning of the kidney are at an increased risk when using this medicine. Such patients will not respond adequately to blood pressure lowering effects. Use of Losartan Bluepharma is not recommended in these patients.

Heart And Brain Diseases

These patients may have an increased risk of heart attack or stroke.

Heart Failure

Patients with heart failure are at an increased risk when using this medicine. These patients may have an increased risk of severe low blood pressure and abnormal functioning of the kidney. Take necessary precautions while using this medicine in these patients.

Blood Pressure Lowering Agents

Such patients may have an increased risk of high potassium levels in blood, low blood pressure and kidney failure. The combined therapy of these agents with Losartan Bluepharma is not recommended as it may lead to blockage of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.

Electrolyte Imbalance

Patients with abnormal functioning of the kidney with or without diabetes are at an increased risk when using this medicine. Such patients may have an increased risk of high potassium levels in the blood in diabetic patients with kidney disease. Careful monitoring of potassium levels in the blood and kidney parameter (creatinine clearance value) is required in patients with heart failure.

Abnormally Thickened Heart Muscles

Patients with narrowing of large blood vessels of heart or abnormally thickened heart muscles are at increased risk while usimg this medicine. Losartan Bluepharma should be taken with caution in such patients.

Pregnant Women

Women during second and third trimester of pregnancy are at an increased risk when using this medicine. Use of Losartan Bluepharma may cause side effects to an unborn baby which includes an incomplete development of the skull, failure of the kidneys to produce urine, low blood pressure, kidney failure, and can be possibly fatal. Discontinue the use of Losartan Bluepharma as soon as pregnancy is detected.

Decreased Blood Volume And Salt Level

Such patients may have a decrease in blood pressure while using Losartan Bluepharma. A low dose is recommended before starting the therapy with Losartan Bluepharma.

Worsening of the Functioning of Kidneys

Patients using Losartan Bluepharma are at an increased risk of kidney failure due to obstruction in the activity of the renin-angiotensin system and diuretics which helps to control the high blood pressure conditions. Consider proper monitoring or discontinuation of the therapy in patients who develop a decrease in the functioning of kidneys while using Losartan Bluepharma.

Increased Potassium Levels in the Blood (Hyperkalemia)

Hyperkalemic patients are at an increased when using this medicine. Proper monitoring of potassium levels in the blood is achieved by discontinuation or lowering the dose of Losartan Bluepharma in such patients.

Abnormal Functioning of the Liver

Such patients may have increased levels of Losartan Bluepharma in the blood. A low dose of Losartan Bluepharma should be given to patients with a history of abnormal liver functioning.

Interactions with Losartan Bluepharma

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

Losartan Bluepharma Tablet interacts with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which are used to reduce pain, fever, and inflammation. The patients using Losartan Bluepharma and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may see an increased risk of worsening of functioning of kidney, kidney failure, increased potassium levels in the blood, and blood pressure lowering effects. The functioning of the kidney should be monitored periodically in patients receiving Losartan Bluepharma and NSAID therapy.

Antimanic Agent

There may be an interaction of Losartan Bluepharma with Antimanic Agent such as lithium, which is used to treat depression. The combined use of Losartan Bluepharma with lithium may lead to harmful effects and increased levels of lithium in blood. The blood lithium level should be monitored when both the medicines used in combination.

Drugs Increasing Blood Potassium Level

Losartan Bluepharma Tablet may interact with drugs which increase blood potassium level. The use of Losartan Bluepharma with these drugs (for example potassium-sparing diuretics, amiloride, triamterene, spironolactone, heparin, potassium supplements or salt substitutes) may raise the levels of potassium in the blood. The combined use of Losartan Bluepharma with these drugs is not recommended. Proper monitoring of potassium levels in the blood is required.

Other Renin-Angiotensin System (RAS) Inhibitors

Your doctor's guidelines may need to be followed while taking this medicine along with other renin-angiotensin system (RAS) inhibitors, which are used to treat high blood pressure. The use of Losartan Bluepharma with other renin-angiotensin system inhibitors (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, lisinopril or aliskiren) may lead to an increased risk of low blood pressure, fainting, increased potassium level in the blood, and acute kidney failure. Avoid the combined use of Losartan Bluepharma with another renin-angiotensin system (RAS) inhibitors in patients with abnormal functioning of the kidneys.

Cytochrome P450 2C9 Enzyme Inhibitors

Special instructions need to be followed while taking this medicine along with cytochrome P450 2C9 enzyme inhibitors (for example, rifampicin) which are used to treat bacterial infections. The combined use of Losartan Bluepharma with rifampicin may lead to decreased levels of an active metabolite of Losartan Bluepharma in the blood.

Potassium Sparing Diuretics And Heparin

There may be an interaction of Losartan Bluepharma with Potassium Sparing Diuretics (amiloride, triamterene, spironolactone) and Heparin, which are used to treat high blood pressure and prevents blood clotting. Use of Losartan Bluepharma with potassium-sparing diuretics may increase the level of potassium in the blood. The combined use of both the medicines is not recommended.

Antihypertensive Agents

Losartan Bluepharma Tablet may interact with other antihypertensive agents, anti-depressants, anti-psychotics, central nervous system depressants and anti-cancer drugs (tricyclic antidepressants, baclofene and amifostine) which are used to treat high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, muscle spasms and cancer. When Losartan Bluepharma is used with other antihypertensive agents may increase the risk of low blood pressure.

This medicine should not be used in patients who are allergic to this medicine or its components. These patients may have the following symptoms if they use this medicine:

Use of Aliskiren in Diabetic Patients

This medicine is not recommended in diabetic patients who are using aliskiren. Such patients may see an increased risk of stroke and heart failure. These patients may have the following symptoms if they use this medicine:

Severe Abnormal Functioning of the Liver

This medicine should not be used in these patients.

Second And Third Trimester of Pregnancy

This medicine should not be used in women during second and third trimester of pregnancy. This medicine may lead to increased congenital (birth) defects such as abnormal growth development in the fetus. These patients may have the following symptoms if they use this medicine:

Traveling With Medication

  • Ensure that you carry enough doses of each of your prescription medicines to last the entire trip. The best place to store your medicines is in the carry on baggage. However, while flying, if carrying liquid medicines, make sure you do not go over the limits imposed for carry-on liquids.
  • While traveling overseas, make sure that you can carry each of your prescription medicines legally to your destination country. One way to ensure this is by checking with your destination country's embassy or website.
